Lately I’ve had a bit of time to myself and have come a few realisations. Recently I was living in Australia, and for the last 2 months of being there I wasn’t working due to lack of an active working visa. Although it’s incredibly annoying to have to live with no income stream for any amount of time, I knew I couldn’t leave early due to other commitments and decided to make the best of it. I worked out as much as I wanted, read great books, implemented new morning routines, found great blogs, listened to different podcasts, cooked, organised and planned everything needed for the upcoming move to Vancouver.
It’s now been 6 months since moving, and I feel like I’m getting a handle on things the way I had it back then. You know what I mean…you experience a big change, do everything you can to deal with it but wake up 3 months later and think ‘I know I’ve been happier than this and I’m not sure how I lost it’.
That feeling of familiarity when you find that flow and ease with the day to day is indescribably relieving. The biggest breathe of fresh air there is.
When we experience change in our life it requires our lives to get busy. Busy can lead to a bit of stress. Neither of these things are bad. What’s bad is when we don’t know how to get out of it.
The thing about being busy is it means our attention is being pulled into many different directions. Attention is the brains greatest focusing power. You’ll only get the crash from having too much going on if you haven’t been careful about how you’re focusing on the challenges in front of you.
What I mean by this is simple. If you are experiencing change in your life and allowing yourself get overwhelmed by the chaos, you’re creating a momentum that is going to stay long after the chaos has subsided. Your mind doesn’t just turn off immediately, that’s why you see people who ‘get on a roll’ and have great things happen over and over and there’s other people who ‘spiral’ into a negative spin. Momentum has power.
Paying attention to where our focus is going is one of the most valuable skills we can learn. I don’t believe that you have to be positive all the time. I think that type of mentality is completely unrealistic. I also believe you don’t have to make things worse than they are. Chances are there’s a few things in your life you’d like to change, weather its a relationship, financial situation or personal issue. Look at it as it is – a problem that CAN be solved with the right action, rather than a looming dark cloud that won’t go away.
